The Best Landscaping Designs for Those With Pools

Designing your landscaping around a pool can be tricky. But if you do it right, the results can be remarkable. A pool can add great value to a home, especially if you live in a warm climate. Here are some tips to make your pool landscaping the best it can be.

  1. 1.     Choose the Right Plants: Trees, bushes and flowers all look great around a pool. But selecting the best combination of foliage is an art. Choose plants that do not shed things like flowers, berries or nuts. Not only will these be difficult to get out of the pool, they can also be painful to step on with your bare feet. Plants with thorns are a bad choice as well. Additionally, you need to be cautious about where you put the larger plants, like trees, because the roots can be a problem. Trees with very invasive roots can do a lot of damage to the pool structure and the surrounding area. If you want to plant a tree for some shade, make sure you do extensive research before selecting one. Put it far enough away that so it won’t cause any issues. The last thing to keep in mind is that you want to choose plants that require relatively low maintenance. Pools are supposed to provide you with an oasis for relaxation. The last thing that you want to deal with is having to constantly trim and take care of the plants around the pool.
  2. 2.     Retaining Walls: Retaining walls are becoming more popular for pool landscaping. Not only are they functional, they look great as well. Retaining walls are a good option because they are relatively inexpensive to install and require minimal maintenance. If you are building the retaining wall yourself, be sure to do some research before you take on the job. Hiring a professional is always a good and safe option.
  3. 3.     Materials: Selecting the pool material can be a tough choice. You want to make sure to choose something that is durable and tough, but also still within your budget. Materials like fiberglass and concrete are some of the best options because they are very sturdy. If you want to add a little bit of color to your design, consider adding mosaic tiles in an interesting pattern. Mosaic tiles come in every color imaginable, which allows for you to fully customize the look of the pool.
  4. 4.     Grass: When deciding on a pool landscape, something to keep in mind is how much grass you want to have around the actual pool. Do you want to have the soft yard to lie out on? Or would you rather have a hard surface like concrete to put some lawn chairs on? If you don’t feel like maintaining a huge grassy yard, then there is no problem with making a big area for lying out, grilling and entertaining. Making this decision early on in the process is going to help to dictate your design choices. Make sure to stick with your decision once you make it.
